Palm Oil is derived from the fruit of the Palm Tree. It is originally from West Africa, but can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. Today, Palm trees are grown through out Africa, Asia, South America, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Malaysia and Indonesia produce 85% of the worlds Palm Oil. Most of the time it is not harvested using sustainable measures. The industry is linked to deforestation, habitat degradation, and animal cruelty. The land of the indigenous animals is cleared for the development of palm plantations. Many animals such as the orangutan and Sumatran Tiger are facing extinction because of these practices.
Palm Oil is an ingredient that is used in personal care products, especially soaps. Palm oil is a great ingredient for soap-making, as it is a wonderful foaming agent, non-toxic, and extremely inexpensive.
However, at Hudson Valley Skin Care we do not use Palm Oil in our soaps. There are many companies that claim that they use Palm Oil from sustainable farms. Unfortunately, the industry has not been transparent and it is hard to believe if this is true.
Instead of Palm Oil, we use 100% Natural Unrefined Shea Butter. Even though it costs us more, we believe that’s a small price to pay to help preserve the environment and the animals that reside within. We pride ourselves on absorbing this cost, as we do not pass this charge onto our customers. Our soap made with Shea Butter is very reasonably priced!
Our 100% natural Unrefined Shea Butter is sourced from Women Cooperative Producers in Northern Ghana and South western Nigeria in West Africa.
