You can make a candle from just about anything, from classic Paraffin wax, Soy Wax, Beeswax, Coconut, and anything else that will burn. However, each wax does not burn the same. Some burn cleaner, some burn longer, and some raise a few red flags.
Paraffin wax is one of the most widely used waxes in the candle industry. It is a more cost-efficient option, but it is also derived from petroleum. When burned, it can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ultrafine particles, and soot into the air. These emissions may contribute to indoor air pollution, respiratory irritation, and other health concerns.
That's why we chose 100% soy wax at Hudson Valley Skin Care—a plant-based, clean-burning alternative for each candle we make.
Wax Isn't the Only Thing That Matters
Fragrance oil quality is just as important as wax. While it seems natural to use essential oils in candles, they're not the best (or safest) option. Some essential oils like lavender can release potentially harmful compounds, including CMRs (carcinogenic, mutant, or reprotoxic substances) when heated. They also don't offer a strong scent throw, meaning you would need more of them to create an aroma when burned.
This is why we use only phthalate-free, clean-certified fragrance oils—so you can enjoy a safe, beautiful scent experience without compromise.
Why we Choose Soy Wax
Here's a breakdown of how soy wax compares to paraffin wax and why we stand behind it:
Composition
Paraffin wax is made from crude oil (a petroleum derivative), which is sent to refineries to be made into lubricating oil. That lubricating oil is what paraffin wax is derived from. On the other hand, Soy wax candles are made from natural soybeans that are expressed to release the oils, and those oils are turned into wax for candles (and, of course, for other products).
Soy Wax is Renewable
Soy wax is made from soybeans, which can be regrown in crops. Paraffin wax is collected from fossil fuels, which are nonrenewable substances. To top it off, it is terrible for the environment to extract and is not biodegradable. We opt for fossil-fuel-free ingredients as much as possible.
Soy Wax releases less soot and toxins
Paraffin wax releases soot because it contains hydrocarbons. Some studies have shown that these can release toxic carcinogens, such as toluene and benzene, into the air while burning. Parrafin has been known to aggregate people's respiratory issues. Soy wax doesn't remove any harmful chemicals and burns clean.
Soy wax can burn longer
Soy wax has a lower melting point, allowing it to burn slower and more evenly. In fact, soy wax candles often burn 30–50% longer than paraffin candles of the same size.
Those are the main differences between the two waxes. Now, let's get into how to get the longest burn time out of your candle.
How to Get the Longest Burn from Your Candle
Have you ever noticed your candle burning straight down the center, leaving wax clinging to the sides? That's called tunneling, and it can seriously shorten your candle's lifespan, but don't worry, we got you covered so it never happens again. Here's how to avoid it:
- Allow your candle to burn until the entire surface wax melts, creating a "melt pool." This typically takes 2-4 hours. Allowing the wax to melt completely to the container's edges will prevent tunneling.
- If possible, avoid blowing out the flame. Use a candle snuffer or dipper to extinguish the flame and prevent soot and smoke from contaminating the wax. Let the candle cool for at least two hours after extinguishing before relighting it.
- Make sure the candle is placed on a heat-resistant surface and keep it away from drafts. Never leave a burning candle unattended; keep it away from flammable materials and children or pets.
- Once the candle has about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of wax remaining, it's time to discontinue use, as it can overheat the container and cause a safety risk.
Who knew there were so many important details regarding lighting a candle? With a few mindful steps, you can get the most out of each candle for a long, safe burn.
