Into the Valley: A Conversation with Alexis of Style in the Now

Into the Valley: A Conversation with Alexis of Style in the Now

We're back with another installment of Into the Valley; our series of conversations with the creative, intentional people we love in and around the Hudson Valley. This time we're sitting down with Alexis, the voice behind Style in the Now, a blog where personal style meets purposeful living.

Tell us a little about Style in the Now, how did it start?

I launched Style in the Now to create a space where style meets intentional living. I started the blog as a way to inspire others to slow down and live life with more intention, while also combining my passion for dressing up and building a wardrobe that you love.

What does your morning routine look like right now?

I don't necessarily have an orderly routine, but I have a few non-negotiables to start my day off mindfully. Within the first hour of waking up, I sit in the sunshine — gently waking up my eyes and letting the sun soak into my skin. I drink a glass of water, do a little bit of writing if I have some ideas or thoughts to jot down, move through some morning stretches, and spend time hanging out with my dogs.

How do you balance feeling polished with keeping things practical?

For me, getting dressed in a cute outfit always makes me feel better, even if I'm just at home, and so does styling my hair. I think people underestimate the power that simply styling your hair can have on your mood.

How has your relationship with confidence evolved over time?

The older I get, the more I realize that you can only control your own happiness. As long as you're happy and confident in your own skin, that's what matters most.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to feel good getting dressed, but doesn't want to chase perfection?

I think that slowly adding pieces to your wardrobe that you love and can mix and match together is a great way to get started. It takes time to build a closet you love, I'm still building my own as well.

Do you have a go-to formula for when you don't know what to wear?

Always a maxi dress and a pair of heels. That is my go-to.

When it comes to skincare and self-care, do you prefer quick routines or longer, multi-step ones?

I stick to quick skincare routines with products made of natural ingredients. For self-care, I do Pilates to strengthen as well as to reconnect to my mind-body connection, go for walks with my dogs, and savor the little things of each day.

Are there any products or rituals that make a noticeable difference for you day to day?

Every morning I like to mist rose water on my face — it's such a refreshing and relaxing way to start the day. Hot water with lemon is also a morning essential.

How do you think small care habits contribute to feeling confident overall?

Small care habits that you enjoy doing simply add to your happiness, which in turn helps you radiate confidence throughout the day.

Do you have a favorite Hudson Valley Skin Care product that's worked its way into your daily routine?

I have a couple! My favorites are the lip balms and hand creams.

Does the small-batch, farm-to-face aspect of Hudson Valley Skin Care resonate with the way you think about what you put on your skin?

I'm drawn to products with locally sourced ingredients because you can often discover exactly where and how they are sourced. Since your skin absorbs what you put on it, I think this consideration is really important. I also love the farm-to-face aspect — I think it's a little luxury because it helps the consumer truly connect with the local farms around them. That can be very hard to find, especially in skincare products.

What do you love most about living or spending time in the Hudson Valley?

I love being surrounded by the mountains and all of the local farms and farmstands. I love knowing where our food comes from and who it's coming from. I think it's really important to be aware of their hard work and to support them.

Is there a spring ritual or place you look forward to this season?

I look forward to seeing the first blooms of the season and the birds chirping in the early mornings.
