Why Most Lip Balms Don’t Work (And What to Use Instead)

Most lip balms don't cut it. Natural ones especially. Gritty textures, formulas that wear off in an hour, or ingredient lists that swap petroleum for something barely better. We knew there had to be a way to deliver real, lasting moisture to your lips without relying on fossil fuel byproducts or synthetic fillers. So we made one.

The Problem with Petroleum

We don't have anything against petroleum jelly as a concept. It works, and it has its uses. But here at Hudson Valley Skin Care, it's not something we're interested in putting on your lips.

Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of crude oil. It forms a physical barrier on the skin, and that barrier can feel rich and hydrating in the moment. But it doesn't actually nourish the skin underneath. It traps whatever moisture is already there, which often isn't much, and does nothing to replenish what's missing. We wanted a lip balm that lasts just as long, both on your lips and in the jar, but actually feeds your skin while it's there. A lip balm you can use every day for a year and feel genuinely good about.

How It Started: A Sunday Stroll Through the Catskills

It started on a walk through the Catskills when I stumbled on a farm stand selling the most beautiful golden bricks of Beeswax I'd ever seen. I bought them on the spot and brought them straight to our workspace Monday morning.

We started melting the Beeswax down and blending it with Cold-Pressed Sunflower Seed Oil from a farm down the road and rich, creamy Avocado Butter. We landed on a formula we loved and started giving it to people. The feedback came back immediately. We knew we had something. 100% natural, long-lasting, light shine, deep moisture. Everything we ever wanted in a lip balm and nothing we didn't.

What's Inside and Why It Works

Every ingredient in this formula is doing real work. Here's what we chose and why.

The formula

🐝

Beeswax

A renewable, skin-safe ingredient used for centuries to soothe and protect. Forms a breathable barrier that locks in moisture without clogging the skin. Rich in Vitamin A to support healing and renewal, with natural emollient properties that condition the lip line over time.

🌻

Cold-Pressed Sunflower Seed Oil

Rich in Linoleic Acid and antioxidants, Sunflower Seed Oil supports your skin's barrier function and soothes inflammation. It's one of the best oils for chapped, irritated lips, sourced from the farm down the road.

🥑

Avocado Butter

Deeply hydrating and packed with Fatty Acids that smooth, plump, and nourish the delicate skin on your lips. This is what gives the formula that rich, creamy feel without the heaviness of petroleum.

This three-ingredient power blend is what makes the balm long-lasting, protective, and genuinely nourishing even hours after application. No fillers, no shortcuts, no crude oil derivatives.
